No Orkut, Facebook for Indian Diplomats

After all the controversy about social networking or community websites recently, the Ministry of External Affairs has laid down a new set of rules for Indian diplomats regarding their use of the Internet to avoid crucial information concerning the country's affairs from falling into wrong hands.

According to a report by IANS, Indian diplomats now cannot access Facebook, blog, use external e-mail services, and so on, in order to safeguard information that may be of national importance.

After a recent circular that was passed, officials can no longer access websites like Orkut and Ibibo, cannot download music via sites like Kazaa, or share photos through Flickr and Picasa. Officials have been asked to refrain from using mailing services like Yahoo!, Hotmail, and G-mail as well.
