PlayStation 2 Now For $99

Sony has slashed price of the PlayStation 2 console. It will now be available for $100 (Rs. 5,100 approx.) from April 1. John Koller, director for Hardware Marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment, posted about the price cut at the official PlayStation Blog. Potential PlayStation 3 buyers and developers have been hoping for a price cut on the PS3.

PlayStation 3's existence might have overshadowed PS 2 in terms of scalability and graphic performance. Still, PS 2 stands strong with above 1900 game titles and boasting 250 'hit' titles. Sony has now extended the life span of PS2 by two or more years.

"In the gaming industry, the typical lifecycle for a console is around five years, but because we build each of our platforms for a large and diverse consumer base, we design our platforms differently," Koller said. The PlayStation 2 was introduced in 2000 and in 2010 it will complete a decade.

Sony India has been promoting PS2 as a gaming as well as edutainment console with the release of Quiz games like Buzz! Users can use the PS2 as a DVD or CD player also.

Recently, Indian Game Dev Studio developed game Hanuman Boy Warrior was launched for PS2 in India.

Atindriya Bose, country manager-PlayStation, Sony Computer Entertainment has said that more games developed by Indian game developers will be released in the coming months. The price cut from April 1 is applicable to India as well, and we wait to hear the new Indian price for the PlayStation 2 console.
