Nvidia ionises Via Nano

Spanky graphics for nanobooks

Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang has told the Digitimes his company will churn out an Ion platform for Via Technologies' Nano processor. The Ion platform will hit the market this year, however Huang didn't give a specific date.

Both companies had demonstrated a chipset platform featuring the Nano and the GeForce 9400 working in love and perfect harmony at last year's Computex trade show.

The two companies agreed to develop a low-cost PC last year, which could run Vista and decode HD video files. Nvidia recently announced the Ion platform for Intel Atom processors.

A good graphics thing being available for both the Intel Atom and the Via Nano should ought to liven things up in the netbook market. Nvidia boasts punters will be able to play modern games such as Call of Duty - Modern Warfare on Ion-powered netbooks.

Should this be true, netbooks will very likely start cannibalising the notebook market, as punters will be asking why they should shell out $1000 for a machine if they can buy something which lets them play a new first-person shooter, use Open Office and watch HD video for less than half the price.

Things will get even spicier when AMD launches its Neo CPUs, which Huang has said will trash the Atom with integrated graphics.
