World’s first laptop, 28 years later


Portable computing began with the GRiD Compass, the world’s first laptop computer. Although, when the Compass hit the gadget scene in 1982, the word “laptop” meant nothing, other than maybe a description of one’s thighs. Twenty-eight years later, the revolutionary laptop designed by Bill Moggridge still looks fairly cool, in a clunky, retro kind of way.
For his contributions to world of technology, Moggridge has been awarded the UK Design Council’s 2010 Prince Philip Designers Prize.
