Ubuntu Gets Ubuntu One -- A Cloud-based Service

Canonical has announced the launch of  Ubuntu One, a cloud based data sync, back up and restore service for Ubuntu users. This cloud based service is currently in invitation-only beta offering two storage options: free 2GB account and 10GB at $10 (Rs. 474 approx.) per month.

Canonical's Ubuntu One is yet another "cloud" based data management service like Windows Live Mesh, Dropbox, Syncplicity and others. To use this service, computers are required to be running on Ubuntu 9.04 or a greater version with Firefox or other standards-complaint browser and a high speed Internet connection.

Ubuntu One allows syncing files between multiple computers through Internet and also allows working remotely as well as sharing files via its web interface. Since it is currently in this invitation-only beta phase, users will need to have a Launchpad account and register to wait for their beta testing confirmation email.

Once the confirmation email is received, ensure that the system is fully updated and then follow the Installation Instructions.

Mainly meant for syncing, backup, restore and remote access of files on multiple computers, Ubuntu One might force users to upgrade to latest Ubuntu 9.04 release.
