The trusty Victorinox knife gets a techie upgrade

For generations the ubiquitous logo of the shield emblazoned with the red cross has signified pen knives of mind-boggling utility and unmatched quality. With sizes and prices to match any budget, a Victorinox knife was always within reach for enthusiasts. Models ranged from the small, single-blade key ring cum knife, to the mammoth Giant manufactured by Victorinox subsidiary, Wenger. The Giant comes with 85 devices and 110 functions.

Recent Victorinox launches have even incorporated USB memory sticks into the knives. The first generation of Swiss Memory USB pocket knives from Victorinox is now available in India. The knives, in addition to the usual array of tools, also incorporate a flash memory stick made by Swissbit in 1GB and 2GB capacities. The memory sticks work without any software, like regular pen drives, and also come with MP3 player functions.

The knives are also available in versions with built-in laser pointers than can be used for presentations.

Soon, however, consumers may also get a chance to shop for the second generation of knives with memory modules. At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January the company unveiled the SwissFlash family of knives. These knives will be available in capacities up to 32GB and consumers who desire data protection will even get versions with built-in fingerprint identification.

A special SwissFlash Flight model, without knives or sharp tools, is designed for users who want to carry the knife on board an aeroplane. The Presentation Pro version combines a sizeable 32GB of memory space with Bluetooth connectivity for easy data transfer and built in buttons to move presentation slides forward and backwards.

The Swiss Memory USB Victorinox costs Rs4,950 (1GB) and Rs8,190(2GB). The model with laser pointer costs Rs5,540 (1GB) and Rs7,750 (2GB). Available at all Victorinox stores in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore.
